AmplificARTE, the power of music in education

The Princess of Girona Foundation and The Art House Academy launch AmplificARTE España, an educational project by and for young people that aims to “understand what reason cannot explain”

Music and education to promote the emotional wellbeing of young people around the world, extolling values and promoting musical culture. These are the aims of AmplificARTE, an initiative of the Fundación Princesa de Girona, through its “Generación Docentes” programme, and the prestigious record label The Art House Academy, founded by the producer, composer and pianist Julio Reyes Copello.

Maestro Copello has travelled from Miami with six of his artists (Teo Bok, Juliana Pérez, Ela Taubert, Joaquina, Paola Guanche and Riza Godoy) who, together with the young teachers of the Princess of Girona Foundation, directed by Salvador Tasqué, will take part in this interesting adventure that aims to give children and teenagers the necessary tools to work on their emotions. And how will they do it? By meeting the author, listening, analysing what they feel with the 8 songs composed by these young people and carrying out different activities.

Frustration, anger, absence, sensitivity, vulnerability, envy, social networks, the inner journey, believing in oneself, searching, light… are hidden behind the titles of these compositions: “Hope”, “Growing up”, “Everything will be fine”, “Finding me”, “In another life”, “Anger”, “I want” and “Girls from Instagram”. Difficult personal experiences lived by the different authors, as they said, that have made them grow, “finding the light in the darkness”. Stories and feelings with which, surely, many of the students who will access this project will identify.

“Music has allowed us to understand what reason cannot explain, even death, which is the most inexplicable thing, can be understood emotionally through music,” said Copello.

In an emotional press conference, Salvador Tasqué highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to being a “generator of generations”, to the search for talent, for those young people who are interested in “giving something positive back to society”. We believe in the need to transform the educational model and commit to a different kind of education, to create a different generation of teachers, hence the “Generation Teachers” project,” said Tasqué.

A project, explained Sandra Camós, head of educational projects at the FPdGi, which seeks young teachers who share a passion for education and a desire to transform themselves and transform education, 30 out of a selection of more than 300, who are trained with innovative methodologies, advanced mentoring, educational expeditions and “experiences to experience what they have not experienced” such as internships in rural centres. Now, she said, AmplificARTE joins, “new challenges to give answers to the challenges of education”.

In AmplificARTE what is not lacking is passion, the belief that it can be achieved. In this presentation event, this connection was evident from the birth of this idea when Julio Reyes Copello, Latin Grammy Producer of the Year, and Sandra Camós met at The Art House Academy, where “the purposes were crossed”. “We need the music market to have leaders who represent the emotions,” says Copello, who also stressed the need for “the spirit to learn and not the reason” and to protect intuition and ingenuity, the music of the music industry. The power of music and innovative education for emotional well-being.

Three formats: Tour, Live, Classroom
Camós explained the three formats of this initiative: AntiplicARTE Tour: within the Talent Tour organised by the Foundation between February and May in different Spanish cities (Zaragoza, Córdoba, Valladolid, Lugo and Girona), which will be experiential educational concerts for young people and teachers. AmplificARTE Live, live or digital concerts with artists and young teachers in schools and universities in various communities. And AmplificARTE Aula, which brings together all the potential that a single song has. To this end, a guide has been created for teachers to work in their classrooms on the emotional wellbeing and personal development of students through the 8 songs. The resources are free of charge and are available on the website.

Manifesto for emotional well-being
At this meeting, Salvador Tasqué and Julio Reyes Copello also presented a Manifesto that reflects the power of music in education and to which anyone who wishes to do so can adhere. The key points of this document are to value emotional well-being, self-leadership, the search for a vital purpose and beauty, in the sense of savouring life through music and learning to be moved by contemplating the nature of a work of art, a poem or a melody.

And in an event where music and emotions were the protagonists, a song could not be missing. And so, with jet lag included, the young artists took to the stage and performed, with their incredible voices, “Hope”, dedicated to the manager, Andrés Recio, who has just won his battle with cancer. “There are moments in life when you have to be strong”, says maestro Copello with emotion, especially at this time when “there is a lot of fragility, the kids are going through difficult times”.

An intense day for these artists, recently arrived from the United States, who completed the day with a concert event at the Secuoya Studios in Tres Cantos (Madrid). Teachers and experts from the field of education and the world of music had the opportunity to get to know this project and listen to the songs they will be able to work with in the classrooms. A magical moment to which they will add many more during this first ten-day stay, such as the meeting they will have with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Incredible dreams they are living, they say. And the adventure has only just begun.
